Republican Latest Primaries 04/25/2012 07:48:13
New York gives Mitt Romney clean sweep of Tuesday primaries – chicagotribune.com Mitt Romney has now won all five Republican presidential primaries Tuesday, effectively ending the GOP nomination battle. Romney Sweeps Tuesday’s Primaries; Declares Race is on with Obama – WGN Radio After Mitt Romney swept the five Republican primaries being contested Tuesday, he turned from securing the Republican nomination and toward the general election against President Barack Obama. Gingrich to decide next move after Tues. primaries | Deseret News CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Newt Gingrich declined to discuss his struggling presidential campaign Tuesday and said he would decide his next steps after the Pennsylvania Primaries Will Yield Bob Casey Challenger By Edith Honan NEW YORK, April 24 (Reuters) – Five Pennsylvania Republicans face off on Tuesday for the chance to run against Democratic Senator Robert Casey in November, while two incumbent U.S. Representatives, both Democrats, are competing for the state’s newly combined congressional seat. Pennsylvania voters on Tuesday will also cast votes in the Republican presidential primary, though that contest carries less suspense. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney appears almost certain to win since former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum suspended his campaign earlier this month. Several statewide races, however, are competitive. The Senate primary pits Steve Welch, an entrepreneur who is backed by the state party and Republican Governor Tom Corbett, against Tom Smith, a former coal-mine worker who went on to own a coal company and has poured his own money into the campaign. Former state Representative Sam Rohrer, who ran successfully against Corbett two years ago and is popular among Tea Party voters, attorney Marc Scaringi and Dave Christian, a Vietnam War representative, are also seeking the Republican nomination. “There’s three things at play: Smith’s money versus Welch’s endorsement versus the grassroots activism for Rohrer,” said Terry Madonna, the director of the Franklin and Marshall College Poll. While each of the candidates have fought for the banner of the race’s true conservative, both Welch and Smith have sought to explain away an inconvenient line in both of their resumes – both used to be Democrats. That fact has turned the Senate race into “the most bizarre Republican statewide primary I’ve seen in thirty years,” said Madonna. David Axelrod: ‘Reign Of Terror’ Has Taken Hold Of Republicans In Congress By Bill Trott WASHINGTON, April 22 (Reuters) – Republicans in the U.S. Congress are under a “reign of terror” imposed by the party’s conservative wing that also has pushed presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to the right, President Barack Obama’s senior campaign strategist said on Sunday. David Axelrod, in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” program, cited the Obama administration’s plans for immigration reform as an example of Republican intransigence in Congress. The political process in Washington should not be “monolithic opposition to everything the chief executive wants to do as a political strategy,” Axelrod said, adding that an “implacable group of Republicans” had blocked any possibility of immigration reform. “I think there are a lot of Republicans in Congress who want to cooperate … but they’re in the thralls of this reign of terror from the far right that has dragged the party to the right,” he said. “Governor Romney and the party have gone way off to the right,” he added. On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Axelrod said that if Obama is re-elected, some Republicans would be more willing to work with him. Axelrod said Romney, the former Massachusetts governor in line to be the Republican challenger to Obama’s re-election in the Nov. 6 election, has nothing new to offer voters. “People don’t know Mitt Romney very well,” he said on CNN. “They see a businessman.
